When to Choose a Queue Over a Request

July 7, 2026

Direct synchronous communication remains standard practice because execution flow is intuitive: an upstream service queries, the target responds, and delay is immediately measurable. Message queues become necessary when processing duration exceeds HTTP timeouts or when traffic spikes must be leveled to protect datastores.

Introducing message brokers transforms transient failures into accumulated backlog. While an unhandled exception in an RPC call fails a solitary transaction, an unprocessable payload in a queue can stall an entire consumer group, making dead-letter routing an indispensable launch requirement.

Understanding TLS 1.3 Session Resumption

July 7, 2026

TLS 1.3 collapsed the handshake to a single round trip, but the real latency win for repeat visitors comes from resumption. A client presenting a valid pre-shared key can skip straight to encrypted application data, which on mobile networks can be the difference between a page that feels instant and…

Structuring DNS for Reliability

August 24, 2026

DNS reliability failures are uniquely embarrassing because the failure mode is global: when your zones stop answering, every health check goes green at the infrastructure layer while the entire product vanishes. The classic mitigation is boring - a secondary provider with independent plumbing.…

Managing Secrets Without Losing Sleep

September 4, 2026

There are exactly two ages of secrets management: 'we keep them in an encrypted file' and 'we were audited'. The distance between them is covered by rotation policies, access trails, and the gradual realisation that humans should read production credentials roughly never.…

Multi-Region Failover Planning

September 26, 2026

Multi-region failover is mostly decided before the incident. The two questions that matter - how fresh does the standby data need to be, and who is allowed to press the button - sound managerial, but they drive every technical choice downstream from replication topology to health-check placement.…
